Our History

The Massachusetts Kappa Theta chapter of Phi Kappa Theta International Fraternity was officially
colonized on April 20th, 2002. However before we could even become a colony a lot of work had to happen
first. The history of our illustrious chapter begins in a restaurant that does not even exist in Dartmouth
anymore. It all started when Jarod Winters and Steve McBride were playing pool in Smokey Bones one afternoon.
Jarod was a recent transfer to UMD from UNH. During his stay at UNH he had joined the Phi Kappa Theta chapter
there, and leaving it was obviously hard for him.

While enjoying pool, Jarod proposed the idea of forming a chapter of Phi Kappa Theta here to Steve. He agreed,
and events were set in motion that lead us to the present day. Jarod and Steve flyered campus and talked to some
sorority girls of Phi Sigma Sigma to try and find other men who wanted to be a part of something great. After holding
a couple of interest meetings and getting definates from gentlemen who were ready to do what was needed to found a chapter,
12 men began the immense task. Jarod was not the only Phi Kap to have transfered to UMass Dartmouth either, as
Rob Deforges transfered in from Case Western and helped as much as he could in the formation before he graduated
in the spring of 2002.

For over two years the Founders and the classes that joined the ranks every semester had one major goal in mind. This
goal was Installation, which is when the chapter would cease to be a colony and would become a full-fledged chapter, with
all the rights and privledges therein. After more than two years of blood, sweat, and tears the chapter was able to attain
the goal of putting on our Installation. The date of Saturday, October 9th, 2004 will forever be a memorable day for the
brothers in attendance. A major goal had been achieved and we finally became a full-fledged chapter.
